HOUSE RULES: Church Bound Priests

Version 1.1 - change from version 1.0 shown in red - dated 5 Feb 2008
Version 1.2 - change from version 1.1 shown in green - dated 9 Feb 2008

Church bound priests

1. All NPC and PC priests who spend time solely on church duties at their church, receive 70XP/level of priest/month after the first continuous year of duty. If the priest leaves the church for some reason (for example adventuring, or travelling somewehere), then the priest must once again dedicate a year of continous service in the church before any further experience can be earned.

For example: a 4th level priest who spends 14 months at their church performing church duties would receive 560XP (4th x 70xp x {14-12}2 months). If after that time the priest visited the locoal noble, then returned to the church to continue his duties, after 14 months he would receive a further 560XP (4th x 70xp x {14-12}2 months).

2. The church mentioned above must be either:

  1. a permanent stone structure built solely from funds provided from the player character and consecrated to the priest’s god; or
  2. an existing church that is refurbished and consecrated to the priest’s god (consecration period of no less than 3 months). The cost to refurbish and consecrate the existing church will be the same as the cost to build a new church of the same size and must be met solely from funds provided from the player character. Note that a refurbished church is no more lavish than a church built from scratch, the costs went into repairs, advanced purifications and sacrifices to the new god to accept the church as a place of worship etc etc.

2A. In the case of a Follower building or refurbishing a church, funds could be provided to the Follower by the player character to undertake the task. Note that to be eligable for the XP in this house rule, the funds used to build or refurbish a church must come from a NPC's or player character's existing wealth, they can not be a loan from any other source. While NPCs can borrow money from player characters, player characters can not borrow money from anyone.

Example: Palmerin could take out a loan from the Szeck to build a new church on Pogrom Island, however Palmerin and his followers would not be able to gain XP under this house rule for time served in that church.

Bonus experience for building or refurbishing a church

3. In addition to the experience for working in the church, any priest or group of priests (subject to temple size) who are involved from the beginning to the end of establishing a new church or refurbishing an existing church receive a bonus XP amount depending on the church size. These XP can be shared amongst a group of priests depending on the size of the church (see table below). The people having the church built or refurbished may not leave the immediate area of the church for the whole of the building/refurbishment period, if they do they are no longer eligible for the bonus XP.

For example: Eight 1st level Priests of Esscencia build a small church in Arvin from funds donated from Crayon's existing wealth. The group all stay in Arvin for the entire period of the church being built. The group of 8 get a 5,000XP bonus which can be shared by only 4 of the group of priests. The group stay there for 2 years. After the first year only 4 priests in any given month can gain XP from church duties, however they could rotate every month or swap after 6 months so that at the end of the second year each priest would have gained 420XP (1st x 70xp x {24-6}6 months) for each priest's 6 months of service.

Church Sizes

4. The number of priests who can earn experience at any one time depends on the size of the church (see below).

5. Of the total floor space in the church, 70% has to be devoted to public areas for worship and other activities. All building descriptions and costs have been taken from the Castle Guide. A grand building is 45 feet tall and has a floor space of 3,200 square feet. All churches are assumed to be grand buildings or larger and made out of stone unless ethos requires otherwise.

Small Church

6. A small church is the size of one grand building, which is a floor space of 3,200 sqr ft. The average cost of this stone building would be 19,000gp before modifiers.

Medium Church

7. A medium church is the size of at least two grand buildings, which is a floor space of 6,400 sqr ft. The average cost of this stone building would be 38,000gp before modifiers. The church of Esscencia in Scant is a medium church which has been revovated. It has a floor space of 12,000 square feet. This church had been gutted by fire and used previously by an evil sect, it required slightly more than 100% of the build cost to restore it.

Large Church

8. A large sized church is the size of at least 3 grand buildings, which is a floor space of 9,600 sqre ft. The average cost of this stone building would be 57,000gp before modifiers.

Cathdral Sized Church

9. A cathdral sized church is the size of at least 9 grand buildings, which is a floor space of 28,800 sqre ft. The average cost of this stone building would be 171,000gp before modifiers. The church of Esscencia in Sky Castle is a cathedral sized stone church. It has a floor space of approximately 30,000 square feet. This church is a stone building and is a full three stories high, it would take 9 grand buildings just to fill the general public worship area. However because it was not completely refurbished at Crayon's expense, it can not be used for this house rule until it is and Crayon can not have any other work done as part of the refurbishment costs. If the cathedral is refurbished by Crayon (which would involve being present during the whole refurbishment period) he would receive 40,000XP.

10. The following table gives an idea of how long a priest would have to spend in a church for each level. This shows that the average human priest who spends their whole life dedicated to the church can at least reach 8th level in their life time, without having to leave the church grounds.

QUESTIONS

Q1: Would these rules apply to priests that were assigned a specific duty by the church. For example: If a priest were assigned to act as the spiritual leader for the crew of a ship built and consecrated by the player character, would he still earn XP the same? What if the ship was concecrated in the name of Esscencia, a sort of floating temple?

A1: No, this would not be allowed.
